The Independent Living Program is a 16-bed scattered-site transitional
housing program for homeless youth – ages 15 and a half to 19 – that
work or attend school full-time and attend weekly life skills classes.
The main objective of the Independent Living Program is to assist
self-motivated youth in achieving self-sufficiency. Unaccompanied
minors between the ages of 15 and a half to 19 are eligible to live in
one of our furnished condominium units. Parental permission and
cooperation is NOT required. Random home visits are made daily. All
youth are required to make daily contact with their assigned case
manager. Through this frequent contact, youth and case manager develop
a case plan by which youth set, work toward, and achieve goals focused
toward the long-term goal of self-sufficiency. All youth that are
employed are also required to save half of their paycheck, all of
which is redistributed to them upon discharge. The Nevada Partnership
for Homeless Youth pays for rent and utilities, work cards (health
card, ID, birth certificate, etc.), educational assistance, clothing,
and medical costs for each youth in the program. Youth are also given
a $75 weekly grocery stipend, a $100 monthly maintenance stipend and
can also earn up to $300 per month if they earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher
in school. Youth may be required to contribute community service hours
on school holidays and will be required to submit to random drug
tests. Youth also attend weekly life skills and counseling sessions.
Upon completion of high school, youth are given full-time employment
opportunities and gently helped to make the transition to adulthood in
self-sufficient, self-sustaining ways. This program is designed for
youth who are experiencing problems at home, but do not have extensive
needs requiring institutionalization. Familial preservation coupled
with independent living has kept the success rate high. Success is
measured six months after program departure by awarding gift card
stipends in the amount of $250.00.
